 | CopCAST Episode 103 - Toys For Cops |
 Santa has dropped his load and the CopCast Crew is back on the job. Morgan gets a special Christmas gift in remembrance of his father. Mack discusses the trials and tribulations of his promotion notification process and post holiday shopping. Rich was able to defeat a nasty little bug quickly enough to do some damage to the Christmas treats.
As a quick side note, there will be no more Apple keynote speeches at MacWorld after 2009. Windows users - Microsoft has issued some serious patches for Internet Explorer so make sure you run the updater.

| Don't help the crooks |
 Crooks aren't smart but they do take advantage of opportunities. You and I would question (hopefully) the morality of stealing something but these guys and girls don't hesitate. Sometimes that is exactly how they get away with it.
We get a number of reports, especially for items stolen from a retail area or office area where the victim saw the item, turned away, and moments later turned back and the item was gone. A good example of that is the purse-hanging-on-the-chair theft. If the thief is quick and calm, he can grab the purse and be in the car and gone before the victim notices it. This is especially true in the drinking establishments where the reaction time is sometimes measured in minutes rather than seconds.
If you went through our recent theft-from-auto reports, you'd see not one was a case where the thief smashed the window and THEN looked around. What he wanted was there to be seen. Look at how many targets are out there. Your car and a hundred others. Why would he break into yours to look around when moving along and finding another car with something in view is right next to you? Make it hard for these crooks!

| Why we act like morons at 4-way stops |
Folks, we can put a man on the moon-or at least a convincible sound stage looking like the lunar surface, but take any four American motorists and put them at a four-way stop and suddenly they regress to moronic levels of intelligence.
First to arrive and first to go. It doesn't sound hard-or so it seems.
Something, some weird Bermuda-Triangle like thing, somehow affects the ability of drivers to make a decision as to who got there first and then what to do about it. Interestingly, four-way stops allow us to see what type of personalities we have.

| CopCAST Episode 102 - Drunk On The Roof |
We cannot believe that this is the last show before Santa comes sliding down the chimney! Hopefully, Mack will get an early Christmas present and be promoted to Staff Sergeant. Morgan is hoping for some new sound effects and Rich wants a bell for his patrol bike.
This week our keynote speaker is the drunk chick sitting on the roof. The other place drunk chicks hang out is the McDonald's drive-thru, with a police escort. This country will never be safe until we get the guns out of the hands of the cats. Let's see, 44 plus 13 equals big trouble for a lady PTA member. You can run but you cannot . . . well you really cannot run. I have an idea, use your underwear to rob a golf shop. Before you can rob and an adult video store, we must check your identification. Did you get the drugs and money? No, I thought you were going to get it. Wireless controller leads to a stolen X-box.

| Talking to a wall |
 My town is fairly liberal/progressive/hopelessly naive about things. That means there are a lot of anti-war/anti-police/anti-violence hippie types roaming around. Eventually you are going to have someone chanting about police brutality or police states or some other type of nonsense.
Most officers will just walk away when they start to hear this stuff but I'm a little different. I consider myself somewhat of a debater and I like to have "discussions" with these folks. I listen to Democracy Now on occasion and I sometimes browse Indymedia. I don't follow this stuff because I agree with it. It's more of a professional interest. If you live in a town with a ton of activists, you are eventually going to have to deal with protests and it helps to know the issues.

| Loose lips sink ships |
I've written in the past about how informants are a pain in the neck and I have recently had to relearn that lesson.
There's an informant that I've been using that I will refer to as "Frank". Frank's a crack addict that we came across when we busted a dealer that he was with. Frank got caught up in the arrest and was dumb enough to be holding some dope for the dealer. Frank talked a good game and convinced us to use him as an informant instead of arresting him. He seemed like a good candidate because he grew up in our neck of the woods and knew everybody involved in the dope trade.
We could say a name and Frank could tell us where that person lived and what he drove. His information was usually spot on. Frank had no significant criminal history other than some theft charges to feed his dope habit so he didn't seem like a big safety risk.

Morgan reached the peak of his existence since having FIOS installed. Mack is ready for his big promotional interview - he hopes. The Butt Bandit got thirteen months in jail!
A "Munchie", Indiana woman lights up a funny cigarette on a traffic stop. Did the old broad really find the money? An Indiana man is busted for stealing his own already stolen van. Smile dummy, you are on Candid Camera. I have an idea - let's rob a couple of cops. The Mexican cops bust a father for drunk driving - not the dad type, the priest type. Girls just want to have fun but one guy is not interested. Some girls just want to fight - with a cop and it pains us to think about this one. Which end of the gun should a robber hold?

| Opportunity only knocks once |
A few days ago I was reviewing drug arrests and came across a guy that interested me. This guy had been arrested a few times for possession and previous reports indicated that he dealt some decent mid-level dealers. This made him a potential informant.
Since he had several previous drug convictions and had just been caught with a distributable amount this time around, he was a candidate for being filed on federally. My department likes us to try to do this with repeat offenders because there is no early release for federal time. Ten years means ten freaking years. Before I filed that federal paperwork, I wanted to give the guy a chance to help himself out by providing information about his "business associates".

| Prevent crime during the holidays |
Christmas time means robberies are up and thefts from cars are up.
Right now we have a trio of bad guys doing street-level robberies mostly in the southern area. Victims are usually caught off guard getting in or out of a car and it's normally at night.
Some of the robberies were for money and one was a carjacking. At night, be very careful and look around before getting out of the car. These are quick hits and if you get caught in the worst-case scenario and are approached for money, don't fight. Give up the money and get a good description of the perps.

| CopCAST Episode 100 - The Centennial |
This week the CopCAST crew celebrates a major milestone - our 100th episode! It is hard to believe that a project that started as a proof of concept has endured and evolved for over three years. We want to send out a big thank you to the Legion of Listeners and our loyal CopCAST Correspondents who have helped to make it all possible.
Things get off to a normal start but then Mack and Morgan turn the table on Rich. The show departs from the present and takes a trip down Memory Lane. You find out a little more about all three members of the CopCAST Crew and how the show has progressed since it debuted in 2005. It is always fun to stop and smell the roses.
